About the breed

The native home of the Red Devon is in south-western England, primarily in the counties of Devon, Somerset, Cornwall, and Dorset. There is even some record of red cattle being there when the Romans occupied the area in 55 B.C. There is some evidence that the seagoing Phoenicians may have brought some ancestral red stock from northern Africa or the Middle East to south-western England during their visitations for tin. Red Devons were brought to New Zealand in the early nineteenth century, for use in haulage teams and to provide meat and milk. The breed is noted for its gentle nature. Red Devons are known in the United Kingdom as Ruby Reds and have been featured on the British cooking shows of Rick Stein and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
